The following images were taken for a cover shoot for the November issue of JazzTimes Magazine in 2004. We photographed Branford Marsalis at various locations in Georgetown, Washington, DC. Branford had been up since 4 am, driven several hundred miles into DC done several radio and print journal interviews by the time I got to see him... and it was only 11 am. Branford is a consumate gentleman, and was incredibly calm and collected throughout the shoot, even when there were difficulties with a couple of locations. Five different locations in the space of an hour... it was quite a haul, but well worth the effort. I felt incredibly rewarded when the publisher commented that it was the best cover they'd ever run. Full credit must go to the editor, Christopher Porter, for the idea for the cover image... a very dramatic half-face shot. Still, it was a terrific day for photography. I have seen Branford several times since then, and worked with him again in 2007.
