These photographs were taken for an article I wrote on the 3rd Operations Group for Air Forces Monthly Magazine, at Elmendorf Air Force Base. The lead pilot was the 3rd OG commanding officer, Colonel Randy Roberts ("R2"), flying a 90th Fighter Squadron McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle. I was flying in another 90th FS F-15E, flown by the squadron's action CO, Major Evan Pettus ("File"). We took off from Elmendorf AFB and went vertical to 18,000 feet, before flying north east, about 80 miles, deep into the Chugach Mountain Range. There we formed up for some tail chasing through the valleys and over the glaciers. I was photographing from the back seat, where the Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) usually sits. It had a full set of controls, including a joystick. Taking photographs through the canopy glazing was quite difficult, because of the curvature causing reflections in the image. Also, the g-forces were changing rapidly the whole time, varying from -1 to +5 G's. The camera was constantly fighting me, because it's weight kept changing dramatically with the variation in G's. I had to shoot at about 1/1000th second to keep the image sharp. At the end of the shoot, we rose up high over the clouds and R2 did some infrared flare drops, simulating a heat seaking missile evasion maneouvre.
